It is a ritual that celebrates as a milestone, the child's formal attempt to acquire knowledge. A rite of passage used to be done in the 5th year of a child's life but in modern day schooling, parents mark this rite of passage in the third year itself. Usually done on the Vijayadashami day. The guru, grandfather or father of the child writes with a golden ring dipped in honey ॐ हरिः श्री गणपतये नमः on the child’s tongue and then in a platter of rice. And the child is asked to chant the same.
